Teen Guest Review

Today’s guest review is from 17-year-old Afrisha, who shares her thoughts on the novel Crank by Ellen Hopkins.

Crank.  Black book, white letters, gripping tale. They say “one should never judge a book by its cover.”  Time and time again, this quote has verified itself in almost every book I’ve read.  There was nothing in the vague, yet stark design of the Crank  cover that warned me of the intriguing words hidden within the pages, nor the wild adventure they would take me on.  By the end of the first page I was hooked, and with every turning page thereafter I was drawn into the world of Kristen, a fourteen-year-old “good-two-shoes” who gets tangled up with “the monster” (crystal meth) and her alter ego named Bree.  Just as it took just one incident, one infinitesimal event for the meth to take over her life, each stanza from Ellen Hopkin’s poetic novel took over my mind.  It is a book that grabs the reader and doesn’t let go, leaving you hungry for more.
